The Story

More than 100 years ago our ancestors and the Cheyenne Indians, who camped near the Gloss Mountains, survived by cutting meat into strips, stringing it up, and drying it in the sun. The process has changed from that of years ago, as has the original name “dried meat,” yet jerky continues to be widely recognized as a food that provides a rich source of nutrition for all ages and lifestyles, adventures and journeys. Gloss Mountain Beef Jerky comes by its name naturally; our farm is home to several Gloss Mountains and is within close proximity to the Gloss Mountain State Park in Oklahoma — an area renowned for its natural beauty, rustic landscape, and sparkling isinglass as well as climbing, birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and stargazing.

About the Name

When great-grandpa Hamp Gosney participated in the Oklahoma Land Run, he drove his stake into what some might consider an unlikely place. His claim was centered in a plain of native grass where a narrow, sandy creek bed wove thru a valley surrounded by red mesas capped with gypsum rock and red dirt slopes laden with crystals that sparkled in the sunlight – rugged terrain and little water. The area he chose was nameless for a time until folks began noticing the splendor of the vale and the unique mineral formations decorating the mountains. The rough hills were titled Gloss Mountains, the vale called Cheyenne Valley and the narrow creek labeled Cheyenne Creek. Ernest, Hamp’s son and our grandpa, was so intrigued by the area that he acquired the adjoining farm which has remained in the family for more than a century.

In the middle of what is now the Ernest Gosney Oklahoma Centennial Farm stands a stately mound, rimmed with dusty white gypsum, overlooking the original homestead. The rock ridge is laden with deep, widening cracks that tell of her age. The name of this mesa – which provided winter shelter for the Cheyenne Indians as they camped alongside her red dirt sides – is Cheyenne Spirit. The silhouette of Cheyenne Spirit is featured on the Gloss Mountain Beef Jerky package. We cordially invite you to experience the Gloss Mountains, Cheyenne Valley, and Cheyenne Creek located in Major County, Oklahoma. In the meantime, we encourage you to share our family’s heritage, the history of our Centennial Farm, and the spirit of our ancestry as you savor the flavor of Gloss Mountain Beef Jerky.
